MyAnimeList Alternatives

Image
With the recent issues with anime listing and database website MyAnimeList  (MAL), people have started scrambling for alternatives. The site was completely down for some time, eventually returning with numerous features being disabled. This problem was due to the website's API, however this was not communicated publicly at first. More info on the MyAnimeList situation can be explained below, with outside sources for relevancy. Otherwise, I'd like to recommend a few alternatives for those who wish to switch services, as well as the pros and cons of each.  If you're here just for the recommendations feel free to skip the section below! For More Information on the MyAnimeList Situation This is a statement and comment thread from the developer of Taiga , which is an application used to track anime videos on your computer and auto add them to listing websites. This is used mostly to manage things like MyAnimeList without the need for manual updates. This now works most...

Shooting Star Spotlights: Defining Otaku

Image
Character: Miki Hoshii from Idolm@ster What is an otaku? This question is asked quite a bit throughout the anime community and the answer differs depending on who you talk to. This question is eventually what led to the creation of this blog! Shooting Star Dreamer's first blog post sums this up, and the later post  discusses breaking the otaku stereotype. Today however, I'd like to highlight the opinions of others, instead of solely my own. Also with this, I'm opening (or somewhat changing) a segment of my blog, known as Shooting Star Spotlights. Contrary to other spotlights, I want this category to highlight bloggers/websites/posts, but specifically anime bloggers. Each spotlight under this title will focus on a specific theme, and all blogs or websites I provide will have a post relating to this theme. The websites I pick may not necessarily be active, but will contain posts that deserve attention. So below are posts that I feel discuss the concept of otaku we...

Anime Artist Spotlight: Mynare

Image
Hello everyone and welcome to 2016! This is Shooting Star Dreamer's first post of the year, so Happy New Year! For today, I'd like to take the focus off of Shooting Star Dreamer and pass the spotlight to another creative individual. Today's topic is Mynare: a digital artist that creates extremely superb work. Focusing mostly on art of video games and anime, Mynare has composed many art pieces which showcase a more "cute" feel to most characters. Attached in this post are many of his works, as well as links to his social media accounts. This time, I was able to get feedback from the artist himself on work, anime, and personal life. Artist at a Glance "I am a digital artist, and I mainly focus on drawing fan art from my favorite video games or anime. I actually consider illustration nothing more than a big hobby, I don't see it as a profession... I really just have fun drawing!" "In the real world, I'm currently an art student st...

Let's Share: An Amazing Artist

Image
It's been quite a bit since I've done a "Let's Share" that focuses on a single person. Like I said when I started the series, I want to focus on people who don't always get noticed, but have a lot of talent and potential. We talk about the "greats" all the time, but what about the people who are working hard, but not recognized? They need attention too. So today for you all, I'd like to focus on an artist who I think is amazing. I love looking into wonderful works of art, and a certain person's stands out to me. For today's spotlight, I'd like to showcase Racho-chan. For a complete list of her work, please check out her Twitter which can be found at this link . She doesn't necessarily focus on one subject, as her work involves drawings of anime characters, as well as realistic art. The quality between both does not decrease though, as you can tell that a lot of work was put into each drawing. On top of this Racho-chan is ...

Let's Share: Other Writers and More

Image
I spend a lot of time on my blog writing editorials and my own thoughts, but I like to help others out as well. A recent comment brought this to my attention again. I know I've somewhat dropped the Let's Share series a bit, but I want to pick it up again. So today instead of blogging about anime or video games, I'm going to share a few people that I think you guys should check out! The list will be in the following format: Name and Website - What do they do? -  Why should you check them out? - Check these people out! Mihoshi - http://futaridehitori.blogspot.com/ Anime Blogger, Japanese Translator  I found her blog by chance when looking for song lyrics. Outside of translation posts, she has a few that are very inspiring with a mature outlook of the world. Even if you don't really care for Japanese music or need translations, I still recommend checking her blog out! ------------------------------------------------------------- Re...

Hello! I'm back from a week off! Here's a taste of new music; Vocaloid Style.  Title ~ Just Be Friends Artist ~ Dixie Flatline Vocal ~ Luka Megurine Visual ~ Yunomi English Lyrics Just be friends All we gotta do Just be friends It's time to say goodbye Just be friends All we gotta do Just be friends Just be friends... It came to mind in the early morning yesterday As if I gathered broken pieces of glass What the heck is this? Drips from my cut finger Is this what we really hoped for? I knew it at the bottom of my heart, the hardest choice would be the best My self-love refuses it and repeats self-contradiction When can I tell it to you? In the slowly decaying world, I'm struggling but it's the only way Carving your faded smiles, I pulled out the plug I screamed with my hoarse voice, rebound and resonance echo in vain Nothing is left at the end of the unchained me Coincidences that sticked us degenerates into the dark an...
