RWBY: Amity Arena Overview

Image
Hello everyone and welcome back to another post! Recently, I've been into all things RWBY and this led me to the upcoming RWBY game, Amity Arena . I was lucky enough to be a participant in the official Closed Beta Test, and I'd like to take some time to share my experience with everyone else! With a name like Amity Arena, many predicted this new mobile game to be a fast-paced fighting game. This guess wasn't too far off, as the app is packing the combat. However, the differences are clear with the end result being a card-based tactical game. On the surface this may sound unappealing; being a clone of the usual mobile games. While the game does take certain elements from other games (such as mobage character enhancing and a stamina based system) the game pushes forward with a few new integrations. Upon starting the game, players are directly thrown into a tutorial. This tutorial is definitely well-placed and not overbearing, as the game can be confusing without pr...

Thoughts on Evolution 2015 Championship Series

Image
Social media was booming last weekend due to an event known as Evo 2015. What is Evo you may ask? Evo, or  Evolution Championship Series , is one of the biggest fighting game tournaments in the world. Every year certain games are selected to represent the main tournaments. They feature hundreds of entries, and each part of the lower and higher level play is streamed for viewers at home. It is such a big event, that people do whatever they can to see it, such as taking days off from work and other efforts. Before we begin, I'd like to clear a few things up.  No, I'm not going to be going over the numerous matches that took place and giving my commentary over them. Instead, I'm going to take a focus on the big picture, because that's how posts work on Shooting Star Dreamer. If that kind of post is not for you then, please accept my apologies. My Experience with Fighting Games First and foremost, before I start talking about the fighting game community and a...

Things We Can Learn From Nintendo

Image
With the shocking news concerning the death of Satoru Iwata , many fans of Nintendo and gamers have been expressing their love for the man and the company. There are numerous videos, blog posts, and other media resources that talk about the CEO. All in all, the whole situation is very saddening, but a comment I stumbled upon gave me another outlook on the situation. Although I do not have the exact comments, I can provide a brief description of them. One comment stated that "Iwata would rather have us celebrating and having a happy time, instead of crying over his loss." Another comment reminded us of the fact that "Iwata left Super Mario Maker for us to make our own games, in his absence." Although its easy to feel sad, things like this we tend to overlook. So using that as my inspiration, I decided to write a post about the positive things we can learn for Nintendo, in honor of Iwata's passing. For one, Nintendo has a very important place in my hear...

Splatoon: What Gaming Needs

Image
Artist Credit Splatoon has been the latest craze when it comes to Nintendo games and perhaps gaming in general. Some people thinks it's a little silly and others are in love with it, but what does Splatoon really mean for the gaming industry? This simple series that might be blown off as a children's game has captured the hearts of many, seemingly infiltrating the "hardcore" genre of shooting games. Before reading more into this post, if you're unfamiliar with Splatoon you should try checking out a few of the following links below. If you understand what Splatoon is and the gameplay, feel free to skip over this section and get straight to the rest of this article! The Amiibo Craze: A Smart Turn for Gaming

Image
Anyone who is part of the Nintendo Gaming Community has seen the tiny figurines known as Amiibo. At first glance, Amiibo might seem like a rip-off. Few people want to spend more money than necessary on a single game. However, when we look at Amiibo and similar merchandise, could the production of such items actually be a smart decision for the gaming culture? If you don't know, Super Smash Bros. is not the first game to make use of Amiibo. Other games that are featured on Nintendo consoles, such as Skylanders and Disney Infinity use a similar mechanic. While Skylanders has it's own unique set of figures, Disney makes use of popular characters from television and movies. I'm not necessarily a fan of these figures, but if you were someone who loved Disney, imagine how much of a blessing this game would be? So if we think of it in that sense when it comes to Amiibo, the appeal is obvious. Super Smash Bros. has a wide variety of characters, and almost everyone who play...

Nintendo Press Conference Summary

Image
Hello again everyone! If you weren't up early enough, Nintendo had their press conference today! I'm glad to say that E3 has finally begun and I can't wait to see what's in store of us. I'm an avid gamer and Nintendo fan, so E3 is like heaven for me. So I'm here to bring you some info on what happened at the press conference. I'm aware that I may not be as fast as most people when it comes to news updates. However, that's not going to stop me from bringing information I find important. Onward to the news. During the press conference today we got a good look at great new features in games. The first game of course, was Smash Brothers for Wii U and 3DS. Surprisingly new characters were announced, but they weren't really the ones we were expecting. The Miis finally take their place in Smash Brothers!  While many have been begging for character customization, this is probably the closest we'll get for now. I can say that I'm pretty ex...

Embracing Fiction

Image
Ever here people saying anime lovers need to get their head out of the clouds? They say that we need to live in reality. Well, those people must be unaware of the benefits of embracing fiction.  Let's kick off with creativity and imagination.  If you're living in the real world all of the time, how can you imagine anything? How can you have creativity? The answer is, you can't. Or if you do have it, it's a pale imitation of an otakus. Take a look at Deviantart for example. Yes, there's a decent amount of other art among the mix, but how many anime artists do you see. A good amount right?  In fact, earlier today I viewed a picture of a Japanese farmer who actually created an image of Naruto in the rice field. If that doesn't count for creativity, then I don't know what does. Now what about reading?  Tell me fellow otakus, do you find reading books boring? What about visual novels and manga? People wonder how we can sit and read for hours on...

Is Trolling Now the Norm?

Image
/> No seriously, stop it. Last time I promised to show a bit of my convention merchandise, but I would like to do a more serious post for the time being. Pretty much everyone online knows about trolling. If you've never heard of it, trolling is basically the art of making fun or tormenting others for ones own enjoyment. No, it has nothing to do with trolls you see in storybooks and fairy tales. It's something that's become the norm in the online world. Hold on a moment and replay the previous statement. Trolling is a norm in the online world. So it's pretty much normal to treat others badly? I don't know about anyone else, but to me that's not a good sign. We shouldn't belittle others for our own satisfaction. What does that say to us as a whole? Then again, trolling is supposed to be for fun and enjoyment. It's not supposed to be serious. There's been an increase of these antics especially in online gaming. The video below show...
